The Girl in the Woods
"What place is this? I was supposed to meet my best friend and… and suddenly… Where am I? How did I get here?" The voice echoing through the woods belonged to a thin, short girl facing a Black boy. The girl had a sweet, soft timbre, with curly brown hair and nearly golden skin that had a pinkish glow on her cheeks.
"Calm down, Olivia," said another boy, who was white and had blue eyes, and blonde hair.
"I'm trying, but none of us know where we are, Scott," replied Olivia, turning to him. "Even Erevu doesn't know where we are, and he's been here much longer!"
Scott turned to Erevu, the Black boy who watched the girl's despair.
"But we already know where we have to go," said Scott. "The black bird showed me! We should go this way..."
Scott pointed in a direction behind Olivia's back. The trio was in the woods, surrounded by strangely crooked trees and a faint mist dancing through the branches. Some plants had unusual shapes, like smiles and tears.
"Oh!" Olivia turned her back on Scott, who was covered in dust. "I haven't seen this bird, and I don't know if we can trust that..."
Scott was annoyed.
"Yes," Erevu said at last. "I haven't seen anyone in a long time, but I don't think we have many options, do we? I've been here for a long time, and no one ever showed up telling me how to get home..."
Olivia was thoughtful. All she wanted was to find her best friend, who was supposed to be waiting for her somewhere she couldn't remember. At that point, she was completely lost and had no idea how to find her way back.
"Okay," said the girl. “We can go this way. We really have no other option…”
The sky turned dark, and the forest got even colder, as if it were about to rain. Olivia put one arm over the other and looked at Erevu's black eyes, feeling a subtle shiver run down her spine.
The girl took short steps, but Erevu and Scott did not rush her. As upset as she was, she wanted to believe that maybe the three of them were somehow safe in the forest, even though Erevu warned her that there were dangers lurking in every corner of that strange land.
Olivia couldn't remember how she got to the woods. As much as she tried, she couldn't recall anything that would explain being lost among those trees with such strange shapes.
The forest barely felt real.
