The Investigator of Attics

Eanes is a lonely and difficult boy. At his birthday party, he can't resist the temptation to investigate yet another attic, but this time he’s caught red-handed. To make up for the scare and the trouble he caused Mr. Butzen, Eanes is forced to help him mow his lawn. This marks the beginning of a great friendship between a ten-year-old boy and an elderly man—a bond filled with stories from Italy. The boy begins to feel himself transforming and growing up.

Until the day he can no longer count on old Mr. Butzen's presence.

Eanes’s suffering is immense, but he discovers that friendship is an eternal feeling, one that is always worth cultivating. Mr. Butzen is Eanes’s greatest friend and partner in his most recent discoveries, and the bond between the boy and the man will leave behind a legacy that will remain forever present in the life of the entire family.

The Investigator of Attics (O Investigador de Sótãos) is an engaging and moving young adult novella that opens up a meaningful discussion about friendship between different generations, acceptance, family life, organ donation, mythology, and more. It also serves as an inspiration for writing, just as Eanes does when he understands everything that happened and decides to write his own story.
